May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Matters
In the past few years, we’ve spent more time and attention focused on our health and wellbeing than ever before, at home, at work, and at school. We all have a role to play in caring for our own mental health, and as supervisors and business partners, we have a unique opportunity to have a measurable impact on the health of our colleagues, teams, and apprentices. When we create an environment of trust, transparency, and safety, people feel comfortable bringing their whole selves to work and are more likely to ask for help or support.

In our outreach to apprentices, CareerWise offers a guide focused on supportive resources related to mental health and wellbeing, stress management, belonging, crisis management and more. Through the course of monthly pulse checks, we ask apprentices about any challenges or barriers they may be facing, and whether they feel additional support is needed. As a supervisor, can you think of the ways in which you provide support, education, and encouragement to the apprentice on your team? Are you familiar with the resources and benefits your company offers such as employee assistance programs, health-related benefits, counseling services, employee resource groups, short-term leave, physical quiet spaces, workshops or training focused on topics like stress and anxiety reduction, or recreational facilities or classes? Sharing your knowledge of company programs with apprentices, and connecting apprentices with your company Human Resource staff, are a great way to help support the newer members of your team.
